Born in Haiti, GunDei moved to Miami in the 1980s with his mother and siblings due to political instability. He quickly found himself caught in the street life.
In 1992 his father received political asylum in Canada and moved the family to Montreal. He managed to escape the perils of the streets through music to get university degrees in philosophy and theology.
